Virginia Allan Young Careerist Program

From the Young Careerist Committee

Ursula Carter, Chair

            The BPW/USA website reveals, “The Virginia Allan Young Careerist (YC) Program should be fun for participants, organizers, and spectators. Goals of the program are to attract new members and to provide opportunities for young adults to network, practice speech presentation skills, and participate in meaningful workshops.”

            The mandatory BPW/USA eligibility requirements for a State Young Careerist are:

  • Must be between the ages of 21 and 35, inclusive, by July 31st following the first

competition in which she/he participates;

  • Must be or have been employed in business or the professions with at least one (1) year of full-time work experience;

  • Must be living, working, training or continuing her/his education in the area served by the sponsoring local organization conducting the program;

  • Must be a BPW member in good standing; and

  • Must sign the legislative platform agreement.

This year’s speech topics include:

1)      Define a Leader and describe how you are developing your lifestyle to become a Leader.

2)      Describe a Mentor and how you would mentor a participant of an At-Risk Girls Program.

3)      You are lobbying Congress on behalf of Women's Rights, for what women’s issue would you lobby - how and why?

4)      How can men and children help women achieve equality and what responsibilities do women have to educate men and children on the inequalities that exist today for women?

            Utilizing our BPW/USA resources, we have developed a local program sampler complete with sample letters, score sheets and the works!  All locals are encouraged to use the tools we’ve put together to host their own YC Program and possibly make a small profit that can be used to support their YC to the state convention or pay for their Young Careerist’s membership.  This year we are doing something a little bit different.  We have an awards program to offer all locals.  All locals that host a program will be recognized.  The top three programs will receive awards in the following categories:

Ø      Most Original Program (Stepping Up)

Ø      Most Creative Program (Stepping Out)

Ø      Most Candidate Participation (For BPW)

Special Awards will be granted:

Ø      To all locals that select their Young Careerist prior to Mid-Year Board (High Stepper)

Ø      To all locals that select their Young Careerist prior to Issues Management (Ruby Slipper)

Ø      To any local that selects their Young Careerist prior to May 1st (Baby Steps)

Ø      To the first local that submits their Young Careerist’s information (First in Step)

Please submit materials supporting your local program (or to request a sampler packet) and your

selected Young Careerist’s information to:
